The June vegetable garden
21 June 2009
The British summer is well on the way… (sort of), with mid-summer’s day in a few days time. The garden has been doing rather well. Aside from the few mishaps with the cursed carrots, most of the vegetables are coming along nicely.
I have fat, although rather short, sweetcorn.

In fact, the sweetcorn plants are so short that they are barely any taller than the garlic.

The second load of oriental salad is looking yummy… I reckon they will be ready by next weekend.

I have no idea if these are okras or aubergines, but I am sure I’ll find out when they start fruiting.

The beans are making a good comeback from the decimation-by-slugs that occured a few weeks ago.

Denty is particularly pleased with the feral potatoes. He keeps checking them for flowers (sign of new potatoes being ready).

The patty pan (summer squash) are fruiting too! This is particularly noteworthy because they need a lot of heat and sun, neither of which are plentiful in this land.

The only bought “vegetable” plants not grown from seed this year… the grafted tomatoes. There are five different varieties (plum, beefsteak etc) but I have no idea which is which. I assume the fruits would give a clue.

The very much bullied (by the broccoli) shallots!

I have edamame (soya bean), asparagus peas, carrots and parsnips growing too, but that’s enough photos for now. Yum yum!

Hmmmm. Yummy. Don’t forget to pinch out the extra flowers that grow in the ‘joins’ of the tomato branches – otherwise the plant is using too much energy for too many fruits and not making the existing ones fat. We raid your garden in one week. Mini sMapps can learn how to pick veggies. He learns fast now.

Yum… what does Denty think about all this bounty? Is he more open to eating his greens?
